Denmark's Mazur gained instant fame when, after appearing with the Danish Radio Big Band for the Sonning Prize concert at which Miles Davis played Aura, she was snapped up for Miles' touring group during two separate stints from 1985-88. It made a lot of sense that, shortly thereafter, she formed her own Scandinavian supergroup with fellow countryman and co-producer Hovman, plus Norwegians Aarset, Klieve and Nils Petter Molvaer. Each is present on the one 1990 studio track, and on the bulk of the material from two live gigs in 2015 that also include Ulrik, who's the sole horn on a live 2008 track.
Molvaer dominates the opening track, very much in a contemplative, out-of-tempo late-Miles mode and, as the compilation progresses, there are further lengthy solos from those mentioned (and in 1990 from Croatia-born Plenar's acoustic keyboard). The overall impression is of atmospheric ensemble work, with Mazur herself mostly a colouristic background presence except in pieces like ‘Subway Groove’ and the more episodically eventful ‘The Holey’. In person, she is certainly more charismatic but her composerly instincts are felt throughout.
