Ugandan-British trumpeter Mark Kavuma has been one of the notable self-starters in UK jazz over the last decade or so.

Banger Factory is the name of both his band and his new record label, and this additional control taken over his career just seems to resonate with his overall dynamism. Leading a band that has numerous rising stars – Deschanel Gordon, David Mrakpor, Will Claesby – as well as elders with experience – Mussanbinghi Brian Edwards and Marcina Arnold – Kavuma is already showing the judgment of a skilled leader who brings together the right personalities as well as technically proficient players. The result is soulful, engaging music with a foundation in blues, bop, swing, and gospel, suitably enhanced by plenty of confident soloing, impassioned vocal performances and smartly shaded arrangements, particularly in the deployment of David Mrakpor’s crystalline vibraphone. At this early stage of his career, Mark Kavuma is already shaping up auspiciously to be a man for all seasons.
