This brilliant Mark Murphy twofer couples Meet Mark Murphy and Let Yourself Go and marks the very beginning of the singer's recording career. Recorded in New York in 1956 and 1957 respectively, on both sets Murphy is backed by orchestral charts penned by Ralph Burns. Meet Mark Murphy kicks off with a brilliant ‘Fascinating Rhythm’, with the singer's signature phrasing already in evidence. Other highlights include a super-slow ‘Limehouse Blues’ and a poignant ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square’. Murphy is heard to even greater effect on Let Yourself Go, which features typically big-hearted, exuberant performances of ‘I Got Rhythm’, ‘Crazy Rhythm’ and ‘Little Jazz Bird’. With two bonus tracks (‘The Right Kind of Woman’ and ‘Goodbye Baby’), terrific remastered sound and the chance to hear one of the great jazz vocalists take his first steps in recorded sound; this is an absolute must-have for all vocal jazz fans.
