It's been a couple of decades since Soskin was the long-standing keyboardist for Sonny Rollins but his credits, which extend as far back as the group Azteca, continue to pile up. The present acoustic trio date, completed in a single session (just like the old days), doesn't hit you over the head but its strengths do grow on you. Initially, one notices resemblances – the sprightly approach to ‘Pannonica’ seems inspired by Chick Corea's 1968 recording (from the Now He Sings, Now He Sobs sessions) while the version of ‘We Kiss In A Shadow’ channels the groove of Ahmad Jamal's live ‘Poinciana’. Soskin's own execution hasn't the panache of either of those players, but he does display an engaging melodic logic to his solos, which makes sense of no fewer than eight song standards and jazz classics, with only two originals (another reminder of earlier times). His regular accomplices Anderson and Pinciotti could hardly be bettered, the latter having a particularly crisp cymbal beat.
