Although this live session is 16 years old it is nonetheless a notable entry in tenor saxophonist Mark Turner's large and impressive discography. It was an opportunity for the saxophonist to investigate a key source of inspiration, Warne Marsh, tackling a repertoire that includes material by legends with whom he had a special chemistry, Lee Konitz and Lennie Tristano. With the veteran alto-saxophonist Gary Foster, himself greatly moulded by Konitz, as his frontline partner Turner revels in a limpid piano-less context where the character of each individual reed and the potency of the unison playing are well to the fore. It is a concerted reminder of the lasting value of the musical legacy of the aforesaid icons – seductive swing, lengthy, darting themes that nonetheless retain a certain airy, flighty character, as typified by a spry reading of Tristano's ‘Lennie's Pennies’. Above all, there is an exchange of energies between Turner's slaloming tenor and Foster's sprightly alto that has a creative tension rather than friction. The counterpoint is thankfully not overdone, and the lightness of touch of the rhythm section, particularly La Babera's crisply resonant, but not obtrusive, ride cymbal, enables the music to proceed by stealth, as well as pull some star turns. With that in mind, Turner's solo intro to ‘Come Rain Or Shine’ is a real showstopper.
