Wingfield has an epic vision, mixing synths, yawing changes of pitch and a muscular feel to create aural stories (tunes they ain't) that can leave you breathless with their scope. And in Stavi and Sirkis he's got the perfect platform to twist and coil around. Having held the fort behind the likes of Outram and Coryell, Sirkis is one of the few drummers who wouldn't be awed by Wingfield's power. Likewise Stavi's warm-toned double bass neatly counterpoints the guitar man's harsher tones, notably on ‘The Way To Etretat’, which has a rare ballad feel. Stavi likewise illumines ‘Koromo's Tale’ which is one of the few cuts that has a more traditional song structure. But it's on the dark and dirty and dramatically diced up ‘Voltaic’ that Wingfield's mix of high tech yet from-the-gut feel best combine. Tectonic slabs of sound and full fathom deep groans swirl and jab. Easy listening it ain't. But Sirkis and Stavi sit content within it, keeping it together to give us lesser mortals a way into these dark meditations.
