As if two 2017 releases weren't enough, Tales From A Dreaming City actually builds on his 2016 release Proof Of Light, which was also a trio outing with Stavi and Sirkis. True, Vantomme lends some synthy colours, as on ‘Looking Back At The Amber Lit House’, but the overall vibe is of a power trio rather than the ambient ambitions of last year's The Stone House and Lighthouse. No surprise then that there are echoes of Terje Rypdal's classic trio, while Wingfield can squeeze out a note in true Jeff Beck style as on the kick-arse opening to ‘The Fifth Window’. Bung in an evident adoration of Allan Holdsworth, and you wonder just how much is left of Wingfield himself. It's all splendidly over the top, but in Stavi and especially Sirkis, Wingfield has top-notch collaborators who support and urge splendidly with nary a hint of irony: Stavi has notable breaks on ‘I Wonder How Many Miles I Have Fallen’, while Sirkis is footsure throughout. Each would doubtless describe themselves as bass and drums respectively, but in a desperate attempt to pump up the pomp, the press release describes Wingfield as a ‘tone architect’. Whatever happened to the humble ‘strummer’? Rypdal would be more than happy to regard himself as such.
