With little fanfare, bassist Mats Eilertsen's Hubro label is creating waves. Highlighting some of the finest in Scandinavian jazz, the label may include diverse customers such as Ketil Møster, Jessica Sligter and Ivar Grydeland and bands like Splashgirl, Moskus and 1982 but each album is four-star quality – indeed Eilertsen's own Sky Dive with his quintet could well turn out to be a classic. This is the bassist's fourth album on the label, his second in a trio format with Fraanje and Strønen following 2010's Elegy. Here, melodic ideas and fragments of melody are scrutinised from every angle, and through spontaneous interaction seem to grow organically under the copacetic stewardship of a trio who create as much by listening as by playing. This is an important distinction; in collective improvisation you are free to play what you want when you want, but this group do the opposite – they play what is needed when it is needed with the result that each short composition has a freshly minted quality.
Each idea, each nuance in the music, is an instant distillation of countless possibilities shaped to the requirements of the moment, so perhaps it comes as no surprise that what emerges is often profound and always rich in meaning.
