The trumpeter Matthew Halsall's previous album On the Go won the 2012 Best Jazz Album of the Year at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards and it's tempting to say this is more of the same. But his fourth album recorded for his own label – with a title inspired by the botanical garden in Halsall's hometown of Manchester – could be his most mellow to date. The trumpeter continues his mission to capture the vibe of the late 1960s modal jazz era but give it a contemporary twist that a new generation can relate to. The chilled mood on the new album owes something to the more centre stage contribution from the pianist Adam Fairhall and harpist Rachael Gladwin, with the Coltrane-apostle Nat Birchall on sax taking more of a backseat on this recording. A strings chamber group also adds to the slo-mo ambience while the bass and drums team of Gavin Barras and Gaz Hughes pitch it just right with their throbbing atmospheric pulse and lazy, downtempo funk grooves. Now into his thirties, Halsall can also evoke at times the smoky perfume of Miles, especially the period of his modal score to the Louis Malle film Lift to the Scaffold. On the finale ‘Finding My Way’, Gaz Hughes' infectious electronic-influenced drum breaks create a slight diversion.
