Maynard Ferguson made his name with Stan Kenton in 1950, hitting high notes that only dogs could hear! Then from 1956 he spent the next 50-years fronting a succession of both brassy big bands and medium size combos. And like Buddy Rich not only was Maynard's aim to excite audiences, but instead of performing standards that should have been retired, MF looked to the charts and incorporated blockbuster movie themes into the band book. As a result this is thoroughly dated disco-jazz with heavy handed wah-wah guitar from George Benson plus all the musical clichés and poor dress sense associated with the get down and boogie generation. Attempts at The Headhunters’ ‘Chameleon’, Paul McCartney & Wings’ ‘Jet’, Stevie Wonder's ‘Living For The City’ two stabs at the themes from both ‘Rocky’ and likewise ‘Star Trek’ don't add to its appeal. Neither does a nondescript mugging of Coltrane's ‘Naima’.
