The partnership between Tyner and Henderson had developed in the studio in the years leading up to this live session, as (while McCoy was still in John Coltrane’s band) they played together on three of Joe’s albums and one of McCoy’s.
Unsurprisingly they revisit the title track of Henderson’s 1964 ‘In ‘n’ Out’, extending the original 10 minute piece to just under 27. It’s a workout, and shows DeJohnette to be as probing and effective a percussion partner to Tyner as Elvin Jones had been in the Coltrane quartet. For a few choruses the volume drops and Grimes’ strong and solid playing can also be clearly appreciated.
Acoustically, the band is at its best on a beautiful version of ‘We’ll Be Together Again’, taking a measured and reflective view of the piece, even if Henderson can’t resist stepping out of ballad mode for a lengthy quote from the old jig, ‘The Irish Washerwoman’, clearly intended to amuse the live crowd at the recently opened Slugs’ club on New York’s Lower East Side.
‘Taking Off’ is an even longer more intense workout than ‘In ‘n’ Out’, clocking in at 28 minutes, but there’s some fine playing from all, and again the Tyner connection with Jack’s forceful drums is to the fore under Henderson’s rather twitchy solo lines. The ideal balance between the flat-out tour-de-force playing on those two very long tracks and the slower-paced ballad comes in a delightful medium tempo version of ‘Isotope’ that shows off this quartet to perfection.
