MMW are a band to catch live, and if you haven't, there's no finer place to start than here, especially as this is a record of their ‘unplugged’ (well, acoustic) tour of 2007. Although the intrepid trio have hung together for two decades now (yup, even MMW are newbies no more), this version of the band may surprise many and delight those who associate them with elongated and loud organ-driven romps. Free Magic gives the jazz-trained Medeski free rein on piano, and he revels in it. Take the opening ‘Doppler’: after a long gamelan-style intro, Medeski's Ramsey Lewis-ish keys roogalate against Martin's high funk, Modeliste-style drums. ‘Blues For Another Day’ takes us freer, with Medeski kicking off in a sort of funked-up Cecil Taylor kind of way (though never too scary). Then it all settles down for a dark blues with Medeski unabashed in wallowing in those long trills and rich chords. And just to make sure we've clocked those jazz credentials, the whole shebang closes with a Mingus/Sun Ra medley (but still underwritten by the Meters) that should leave you boogieing 'til the sun goes down (or comes up, delete where applicable).
