Few may have predicted that the loose alliance of a guitar heavyweight and the jam band heroes would flourish, but Juice reveals what a rich partnership this is. Juice kicks in with the kind of Meters spiced groove, ‘Sham Time’, based on the Eddie Harris funker, that epitomises much of the quartet's earlier work. And that itchy vibe that'll get you reaching for your dancing shoes runs like a river through the album, notably on the stand out ‘Juicy Lucy’, with its lary wah guitar, Cuban riff and goodtime groove. But there's also a more considered, structured tone: Sco's Steely Dan-like blues ‘I Know You’ is gorgeous and features Medeski's ever more present piano work. The 1960s tributes also catch the ear; ‘Light My Fire’ leaves you curious why the fab four don't cover more Doors material, while the re-frame of ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ as a dub reggae maelstrom wrongfoots wonderfully the unwary listener. MSM&W have plenty more juice in the tank yet.
