I've yet to find out why a London-born, Ohio-raised, NYC-educated saxophonist now makes her home in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim. But I know that she released her debut Day One on Greg Osby's Inner Circle label and that she impressed, both on disc and live, in a couple of cameos on the 2015 David Lyttle album Faces (reviewed in Jazzwise 198). Unlike that set which encompassed both folk and urban influences, this is a straightahead jazz trio reminiscent of such lineups led by Rollins, Henderson or Branford M. Despite the absence of any hiding-place, Gaillard emerges triumphantly on a mostly original programme, her commanding presence already evident in the opening C-minor blues ‘Gene's Scene’. The only standard is an unexpectedly no-nonsense ‘As Time Goes By’, while the closing ‘A Day in El Médano’ clearly leads to nights in Tunisia. It's a pleasure also to hear Lyttle doing his Art Blakey-Ed Blackwell stuff at such length, while O'Loghlen (co-leader of the adventurous Irish-trad band Ensemble Ériu) is a quiet source of strength and ideas. Leaving the listener wanting more, this is easily enough to go on with.
