Along with Robert Cray, Melvin Taylor was one of the most significant figures to emerge in blues in the 1980s. He recorded steadily in the decade and was still on point in the 1990s, as this excellent album attests.
Although the term ‘power trio’ has become largely synonymous with jazz-rock, it is entirely appropriate for Taylor’s work here as the three-piece he formed with bassist Willie Smith and drummer Steve Potts cranks up the excitement without, crucially, hitting too much of a frenzy. The band has control amid intensity. Taylor is a stupendous soloist who draws as much on blues heroes Albert King and Buddy Guy as he does soul-jazz titans such as Cornell Dupree and David T Walker, and his blend of easy breathing melodic fills and longer, louder explosive lines brings excellent variety to the colour palette of the music. On a song such as ‘All Your Love (I Miss Loving)’, Taylor cooks, combining a winsome lead vocal with tasty guitar licks that say more in just four bars than some can in 64.
