Recorded at the historic Van Gelder Recording Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, Sometime Ago finds vocalist Meredith d'Ambrosio in captivating form. The album opens with a beautiful version of pianist Halberstadt's ‘When Springtime Turns To Fall’, a song which first appeared on his 1995 album, Clockwork.
Taken from his 1990 debut, Inner Voice, the Halberstadt tune ‘Feast’ here becomes ‘Feast Your Eyes’ with the addition of d'Ambrosio's salutary lyrics about why it's never a good idea to fall for a gourmand. Composed by John Williams, Alan and Marilyn Bergman for the 1995 US romcom, Sabrina, and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, d'Ambrosio delivers an understated, infinitely touching bossa treatment of ‘Moonlight’.
A favourite of instrumentalists and vocalists alike, having been waxed by everyone from Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans to Mark Murphy and Norma Winstone, Sergio Mihanovich's ‘Sometime Ago’ is a standout for its conversational intimacy, while d'Ambrosio brings an incredible lightness and rhythmic bounce to Ralph Rainger and Dorothy Parker's ‘I Wished On The Moon’, a song that has become indelibly associated with Billie Holiday. The d'Ambrosio original 'Oh Well, What The Hell' showcases her own singular talents as a composer.
