Just how many noise musicians does it take to scalp a cloud of killer bees with a buzzsaw? The trio of Akita, Gustafsson and Pándi caused copious bouts of cochlea trauma with the blistering commotion of their Cuts set from 2013, but here recruit the ubiquitous Thurston Moore for a session of no holds barred din-making that ups even that ante. The majority of this double album finds the devilish quartet perpetrating a bellicose scorched earth policy, combining nullifying components, surging towards the great purge, before pressing down with impunity. Yet, despite the presence of bonus babble, these four extended improvisations exhibit a modest dynamism not always evident during the torrential overload of their unrelenting predecessors. Moore acts as something of an emancipator – simulating six-string champs such as Sharrock, Haino and the Butthole Surfer's Paul Leary – supplementing Akita's circuit-scouring rig while freeing-up Gustafsson, enabling the Swede to focus on issuing post-fire radicals from his sax like a sperm whale spouting sprays of molten pumice. This cult of clamour might not command too many surprises, but the dedication, determination and energy exhibited by these battlehardened vets simply has to be admired.
