This would be a significant release if only for the presence of a major new composition from Metheny. The fact that his 31-minute suite is centrepiece to a superb live performance paying tribute to the life and music of one of Europe's unique jazz talents makes this a CD to own and treasure. Most ambitiously, Metheny composed Hommage to be played alongside edited visuals of Weber playing at different times in his career. The ‘live’ musicians then improvise with the on-screen Weber. It works as a discrete piece of work but with the visuals it's even more impressive. Elsewhere, the presence of old buddies like Garbarek, who also contributes a stunningly austere new piece, and Burton, both of whom played at Weber's 65th birthday party 10 years ago (recorded as Stages Of A Long Journey) brings a sense of completion to Weber's musical journey. But not termination. For as we know Weber's work continues to be co-created over and again as his work is sampled and re-constructed by others. And that's what makes Hommage special: Weber may not have been able to play since his stroke, but this recording is no sentimental tribute. Because Weber is a living part of this recording, it becomes a celebration not just of the man, but also of music's gift of renewal for us all.
