If the singer-songwriter Michael Franks hasn't crossed your radar yet, then might I suggest you snap up this excellent 5-CD set courtesy of Warner's Original Album Series. OK, it's very much a no-frills kind of package – don't expect to learn much in terms of biographical detail or personnel as there are no liner notes included – but as it's available from certain online retailers at less than 15 quid, it's still an absolute steal. The set presents the five albums Franks released after his self-titled 1973 debut, beginning with The Art of Tea (1976) and ending with One Bad Habit (1980). You'll doubtless have already heard some of his material sung by the likes of Carmen McRae, Diana Krall, Kurt Elling and more, but it's a delight to go back to the source and hear the man himself sing ‘Underneath The Apple Tree’, ‘Popsicle Toes’, ‘Vivaldi’s Song' and the great ‘Nightmoves’.
