It's only after the event that the Rendell/Carr quintet rightly became recognised as one of the UK's most creative groups of the mid-1960s ranking alongside The Jazz Couriers, The Joe Harriott Quintet and any number of US players snapped up by Blue Note, Riverside and their ilk. One can only hazard a guess of the outcome if the Rendell/Carr crew had been recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in his studio. A mono recording, this was privately taped by the tireless Les Tomkins at The Highwayman, Camberley in November 1965. Considering the conditions, soundwise it's of quite acceptable quality in that for the most part it not only captures Rendell and Carr at full throttle, but in the case of Trevor Tomkins his crisp, sprightly drumming that along with Dave Green greatly enhances the uplifting spirit throughout all six tracks — notably Neil Ardley's ‘Shades Of Blue’, Mike ’n’ Ian's ‘Hot Rod’ with its ‘Milestones’-inspired references and Garrick's own ‘Promises’. Not only a fine reminder of Michael Garrick's highly personalised finger-bustin’ approach but of all concerned. As they say, well worth a punt.
