The name Michael J McEvoy might not ring a bell even though he's someone who has forged a successful career since the 1980s first as a co-songwriter with Ian Dury and Edwyn Collins among others and then as an acclaimed film composer, most notable recently for his jazzy score on the 2008 movie Me and Orson Welles. Here he takes some time out to compose and record with some of his favourite British jazz musicians. Trumpeter Gerard Presencer, alto saxophonist Nigel Hitchcock and pianist Jason Rebello (who takes a few solos while McEvoy seems to stick to comping) are all in a classic funky jazz mould and all do a fine job of soloing on McEvoy's instantly hummable well-written themes. The Long Way Home is a classic mainstream post-acid jazz recording with soul, R&B-funk and latin influences as well as that post- Miles Davis bluesy atmospheric cool, beloved of jazz-loving film scribes. In some ways it's a bit like a more laid back version of fellow movie composer and jazz musician Kyle Eastwood's current band. It's certainly one to put you in the right mood before a big night on the town.
