Such is Landau's reputation as an A-list side and I session man, it's easy to overlook that he's an old skool blues-rocker, most obviously in partnership with Robben Ford. Indeed, two of the grungier cuts here, ‘Renegade Destruction’ and their rage against the rich, ‘Greedy Life’ date from that collaboration.
Landau is at home in this rocking context, playing with long time pals like Johnson who just sits in a pocket like a well-worn pair of sneakers. Truth to tell, the out and out rockers like the ‘Voodoo Child’-tanged ‘Bad Friend’, from his last album Rock Bottom, or the newie ‘Well Let's Just See’ verge on the histrionic, largely because of Frazee's growled but limited rock voicings.
However, on the slower, bottle neck edged ‘Can't Walk Away from it Now’, all those slurs and squeezes seduce as ever. And when the set closes with two instrumentals, the lonesome swells of ‘Tunnel 88’ and epic yet inward ‘Dust Bowl’, you kind of wish the album was more inclined that way.
