A very confident and assured showing by Michael Wollny's Trio who present a concept album linked to the theme of ‘ghosts’. For Wollny, songs are like ghosts, and over a period of months he has assembled a selection of music that regularly haunts him – from Franz Schubert's ‘Erlkönig’ to jazz standards, film music such as ‘Willow's Song’ from The Wicker Man, songs by Nick Cave and Timber Timbre to the spirits that inhabit the Irish folk song ‘She Moved Through the Fair.’ Yet this is far from doom-laden, navel-gazing stuff. Yes, several minor key compositions, and the album title track is indeed haunting and atmospheric. But numbers like ‘She Moved Through the Fair’ moves to the major and the sunlight while the use of electronics on a composition such as ‘Hand of God’ is tasteful and reminds us this is the 21st century and not a piano trio from the 1960s.
