The first recorded collaboration between Dominican Republic-born pianist Michel Camilo and Spanish flamenco guitarist Tomatito, entitled Spain, secured a Best Jazz Album award at the 1st Annual Latin Grammy Awards back in 2000. The pair returned to their theme on Spain Again in 2006, and now they're back together again for Spain Forever. The flavours of the first disc were latin and cinematic, and as the thematic thread in the titling of the projects suggests, the sound world remains fairly constant across all three albums: Chick Corea's ‘Spain’ appeared on the first disc, Charlie Haden's ‘Our Spanish Love Song’ features here. It's not exclusively Iberian in inspiration: ‘Cinema Paradiso’ heads off to Italy while ‘Nuages’ carries things in a playful, French gypsy jazz direction. Erik Satie's ‘Gnossienne No. 1’ plunges the pair into Mediterranean-infused minimalist impressionism – the version here is handsomely sculpted by Camilo and Tomatito, whose interplay throughout suggests a deep, and still growing, musical empathy.
