It’s not a great title, is it? ‘Wassup!?’ – in the manner of those Budweiser ads – would have been more fun. And the cover – basically a head shot of the too-broadly-smiling main man wearing black and posed against a black background so that his head appears to be floating like a balloon in the night sky – isn’t great either. Still, Michel Camilo isn’t a Grammy winner for nothing, and this second recorded foray into the world of solo piano performance is a masterful display. Seven originals to four standards seems a good balance: the self-penned title track gets things under way in a good-time, boogie-woogie vein before ‘A Place in Time’ darkens the mood and introduces an elegiac, introspective, classically influenced note to proceedings. A cover of Paul Desmond’s ‘Take Five’ – offered as a homage to the recently deceased Dave Brubeck – shows Camilo’s ease with complex polyrhythms while the latin-accented ‘Paprika’ barrels along at breathtaking speed. Shifting in mood and style, and dense with musical ideas – what’s up with that?
