It hardly seems 17 years since Petrucciani passed, though doubtless there's a whole younger generation of fans who’ve grown up unaware of the diminutive dazzler. Against unlikely odds, Michel not only acquired complete ease and familiarity with the language of Evans, Hancock, Tyner and a few others, but he frequently equalled them in the combination of speed, swing and sweetness – reflecting a taste in listening which ran from Louis Armstrong to Wes Montgomery. The set on the first CD and the DVD was a public realisation of the studio album Both Worlds (done with the same personnel except that Bob Brookmeyer is replaced by Leloup) and it places typically melodic Petrucciani originals in a context that brings out his most energetic playing. The second CD's shortish date with the Philharmonic, on the other hand, does little to enhance or stimulate the leader beyond some fulsome orchestration of his writing, while the closing duet of Michel and Steve Gadd is perhaps too short to make a lasting impact.
But the main set is a strong reminder to reinvestigate the rest of the pianist's work.
