Very gratifying to find new unreleased Petrucciani, in this case from a concert taped by South German radio that’s a forceful reminder of his qualities. The five originals had all been recorded, mostly with the same rhythm-section, on the then-current Blue Note album Michel Plays Petrucciani, but these joyous versions are longer and more outgoing – likewise, five standards (including ‘Giant Steps’) take off in no uncertain manner. Given that Petrucciani’s technical ability was so complete, it’s remarkable how melodic was his improv, often at high speed, and how his soaring invention uplifts both his audience and his accompanists. There’s not much solo space for either Peacock or Haynes which, in other circumstances, might be a serious disadvantage, but Petrucciani is so compelling that it’s no ground for complaint.
