Michel Sajrawy, a Palestinian of Christian faith with an Israeli passport and a British conservatory education, is a fusionist for whom musical boundaries are no obstacle at all but instead a deep creative resource. Recently he's coined the term ‘Arabop’ for music that combines bebop lines with Arabic elements, which explains the context for this collection of ear-grabbing Occident/Orient-melding performances. Across a variety of originals mixed with Syrian and Turkish folk tunes and the Egyptian classic ‘Longa Farah Faza’, Sajrawy performs fiendishly complicated maqam-based solos on his old Stratocaster rather than on a fretless or modified guitar. The effect is highly distinctive, not least on originals that move fluidly between Arabic and Western modes, such as the title track and ‘1 Count Before 60’. Clever use of chant, oud and darbuka add further charismatic flavours. “I really love the music of my culture, and I really love jazz. I feel both in my blood. I don't want to stop, to choose,” Sajrawy has said. On the evidence of Arabop, the decision not to decide is proving a fruitful one. As Sajrawy says: “I don't want to sound like another musician.” And he doesn't.
