The young Spanish-born trumpeter Miguel Gorodi is a fairly recent ex-Guildhall graduate whose initial efforts have sent him mostly in the direction of larger ensemble work, as a sideman for alto saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi's SEED Ensemble, Barry Green sextet and Gareth Lockrane Big Band among others. He puts this initial experience into an auspicious debut, Apophenia, with his compositions and arrangements for chamber jazz nonet. Imagine a truncated Beat & Pieces Big Band infused with elements of Steve Reich's minimalist phasing, the kind of looping cycles heard in John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quartet, with a dose of Gil Evans, and you get some idea of the young bandleader's aesthetic. The arrangements are neat, airy and accessible; there's nothing too elaborate or over-thought. An in-demand London-based rhythm section and reeds players such as Michael Chillingworth, Gareth Lockrane and George Crowley and the trumpeter-leader himself capture a sense of the robust writing in a series of high-spirited solos.
