Mike Gibbs celebrated his 80th birthday with two nights at the Vortex in September of last year directing a largely new jazz generation line-up. Rewind over a quarter century for this 2CD archive set that documents an Arts Council Contemporary Music Network tour in which Gibbs (who arrived here in the late 1960s from then Rhodesia) joins with the guitarist John Scofield, the pair sharing the writing credits. A couple of Sco's originals stem from his then Blue Note quartet album Meant to Be. There are many highlights including ‘Gill B643’, a tribute to old boss Miles Davis' ex-partner on which Wheeler is on great form. Sco gets down and dirty on his blues-charged ‘Science and Religion’, supported by Gibbs' shouty anthem-like brassy arrangements, while ‘Blueprint’ is a Township-inspired delight with Sco so coolly offhand and at his best. The exciting stuff tends to be in the smaller group settings with some heroic performances from Gibbs' long-time bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart and a top notch range of British jazz instrumentalists.
