It’s taken last year’s tribute concerts to coax a new album out of Gibbs. He’s clearly a connoisseur of Evans and has chosen a very interesting half-dozen charts to rewrite, alongside his two originals and two other arrangements of tunes by Carla Bley and Ornette (‘Ramblin’’ contains an orchestrated quotation from Coleman’s recorded solo). When it comes to the Evans adaptations it’s a lot to expect of, say, Finn Peters to emulate the excitement of Adderley in the version of ‘St. Louis Blues’ (from New Bottle Old Wine), or indeed Julian Siegel’s soprano to replace Miles on ‘Wait Till You See Her’ (Quiet Nights). If you’re familiar with the classic records you may lament the rather dry mix of the horn ensembles and even some of the tempos – granted that Evans’ original version of ‘Las Vegas Tango’ speeded up, that’s no reason to begin at the faster tempo (another cover of the same piece on the 2004 12-inch B-side by Ed Jones’ ED/GE project, affords an interesting comparison). Yet solos on ‘Las Vegas’ by Siegel (tenor), Nightingale and Janisch quell the reservations, while Robson does well on both ‘Spring Is Here’ (Gil’s Bill Evans transcription from At Carnegie Hall) and ‘Sister Sadie’ (Out Of The Cool). Leave behind your preconceptions and there are many fulfilling moments, not only from soloists but of course from Gibbs’s scoring and re-scoring.
