Happy birthday Cadillac! Okay, bit late now for their 50 years knees up, but Live 1972 is a fitting marker as Westbrook was co-founder of the label and this was their first release. That said, this is actually the re-issue of the Hut re-issue with its extra material and some title twiddling. Westbrook had offered this to RCA as the follow-up to the big band extravaganza Metropolis. But perhaps no surprise, RCA rejected this rock-centric small group given the success and kudos of Metropolis.
This short-lived band was not the more coherent Solid Gold Cadillac, which would get RCA approval, but it’s not without virtue. The blues riff of ‘Travellin’’ somehow seeds the stomping theme to The Uncommon Orchestra’s ‘Gas, Dust, Stone’. Khan is splendidly theatrical, romantic and angry all at once, whether doing his effects-laden thang on ‘Down On The Farm’ or straight ahead elegiac on the closing ‘Metropolis’. Westbrook’s electric keys are way down in the mix, with Boyle’s rakish guitar hogging the sound, especially on the jam around the ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’ riffs of ‘Pleasure City’.
It’s a romp – as befits a big birthday. But a stepping stone, not a point of arrival for Westbrook and his chums.
