Mikele Montolli is an Italian double bassist-composer in his early thirties who’s performed in a highly diverse number of settings from straightahead (Don Menza) and avant-garde (Marshall Allen) through to roots-improv hybrid outfits influenced by North African, flamenco and Balkan folk music. Having graduated from his jazz studies in Graz and moved to London in 2010, Montolli releases his debut of all-originals with a young contemporary piano trio. The bassist’s centred tone and lyrical, spacious themes impress as does the pianist Charlie Stacey, whose creativity with spacey synth pads is also demonstrated in his work with the superb young drummer Yussef Dayes’ (post-Yussef Kamaal) trio. Jamie Murray, the man behind the kit, equally catches the ear with his inventively fractured grooves, drawing from electronica, hip hop and swing and a striking drums sound that’s unusually under-produced for an acoustic jazz set-up. Satellite House lays down an unpredictable yet vibrant collage of ‘spiritual’, modal, free jazz, classical and contemporary music. If it can seem too raw and disjointed at times, blame it on youth and ambition. These are three musicians worth keeping a very close eye on.
