You could reprint most of the Round About Midnight review above, and it would be equally relevant to this. Four stars at least for the music (five might be reserved for the Davis Porgy And Bess or Sketches Of Spain), four stars for the packaging and even the sound quality, but one star for the concept. Who needs a CD, as above, with a complete mono programme followed by the same music in fake ‘stereo’ or, in this case, the fake ‘stereo’ version followed by the mono? Especially as an opportunity has been missed to include the later, 1987 digital ‘stereo’ version produced by Teo Macero, which actually had a different edit on most tunes (analysed in detail on p.171 of the booklet to Columbia's 6-CD box on Davis/Evans from 1996). The slight difference in timings for some individual tracks only indicates different cueing of a track's start, with some band intros interpreted as codas, and vice versa, while the music remains the same. So why bother?
