This appears such an obvious idea that you wonder why no compiler has thought of it before. Basically, the contents consist of the Jazz Track/‘Green Dolphin Street’ session; all of Kind of Blue (except for the alternate take of ‘Flamenco Sketches’); the Legrand Jazz tracks that include Davis and Evans; the two live sessions later released by Columbia (from Newport and the Plaza Hotel); and two less well-recorded broadcasts of the sextet, with the bonus of one on which Red Garland came back to replace Evans. It’s all fascinating to the collector and, though the more hardcore live sessions probably won’t endear themselves to people who only know KoB, if you know some of those you could give them this for educational purposes. Three comments about detail: There’s apparently an earlier airshot with Evans, which seems not to be on disc anywhere; the airshot dated 30 June is apparently usually dated as 9 August; and the two live versions of ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’ with Evans find him playing an intro virtually identical to Shorty Rogers’ ‘Infinity Promenade’ from 1953 – acknowledgement of an early example of ‘modal jazz’, perhaps.
