In July 1991, three months before his death, Miles Davis played at the Jazz à Vienne Festival in France. Zycopolis filmed the concert and the audio from the soundtrack forms the music on this album – it is excellent quality (two opening numbers have been omitted, presumably for reasons of or sound quality).

Miles’ band was pared down to a sextet and the setlist included concert favourites like ‘Time After Time,’ (Miles plays movingly and tenderly on both open and muted trumpet), and the 18-minute ‘Human Nature,’ which features a long, explosive alto sax solo from Garrett (the sax sound fluctuates at the end, because Garrett lost his wireless mic). Of particular interest are two numbers composed by Prince, which Miles planned to include on the album that became Doo-Bop. ‘Penetration’ is a slice of mid-tempo funk, while the bluesy ‘Jailbait’ has Johnson channelling his inner Jimmy Smith on organ. Johnson also solos on Marcus Miller's ‘Hannibal’ and ‘Amandla’.

The album is dedicated to drummer Ricky Wellman, who died in 2013, and numbers like ‘Wrinkle’ and ‘Finale’ (a short jam featuring just the band) showcase the formidable rhythm section of Wellman, Foley and Patterson. Throughout the concert Miles sounds in good lip, and this recording shows that, even towards the end of his life, there was no letting up for him; every note still mattered.
