This concert was recorded on 13th July 1985, when Miles Davis opened the second day (Saturday) of the North Sea Jazz Festival at 6pm in the Tuinpaviljoen (garden pavilion) at the old Congresgebouw in The Hague (for many, a far better setting than North Sea's current location in Rotterdam). It is well recorded, and is accompanied by a DVD of the concert that includes two extra tracks, ‘Pacific Express’ and a medley comprising ‘Katia/Jean-Pierre/You’re Under Arrest/Then There Was None’. The liner notes speak of ‘middle-aged fans… who had never given it a thought that Miles may have changed [and gone electric] during his long career. They knew one or two popular albums of the 1950s and expected to hear exactly the same thing.’ Really? As it happened, I was at this concert and did not see any ‘bewildered’ concertgoers. The Tuinpaviljoen that night was given over to electric bands (B.B. King then Luther Allison and finally The Fabulous Thunderbirds) and if they were expecting ‘Stella by Starlight’ then they really must have come from a home for the bewildered. The liner notes also speak of ‘youngsters in the audience… reacting enthusiastically’ at ‘familiar’ themes such as Michael Jackson's ‘Human Nature’ and Cyndi Lauper's ‘Time After Time’. I don't know why the writer ascribes this response to ‘youngsters’; everybody was responding, the atmosphere was electric; Miles' incredible stage presence had the crowd (of more than 2,000) in the palm of his hand. This concert was from a period when Miles' comeback was beginning to gather incredible momentum, with sold out concerts across Europe and the Far East. With Bob Berg on saxes and John Scofield on guitar it was what many people believe to be his best post-furlough band while their repertoire that night largely came from his albums Decoy, Star People and You're Under Arrest – again, the best albums of this phase of his career. At that early evening concert, the band was on fire, and this album captures some of that magic.
