Many of these seven off-air recordings were originally on bootleg LPs, the best-known material being the frequently excerpted TV session of the quintet with Coltrane plus the Miles Ahead big band (the notes here by one Jean-Pierre Jackson are incorrect to say this was transmitted live – it was sat on for 15 months before being aired). But, though the sound is ropey, it's generally consistent and, naturally, anything by these musicians is gripping. Heard in this lo-fi context, Miles’ own revolutionary soloing sticks out from the fairly conservative repertoire used on broadcasts, and it's revealing how ‘Walkin’’ on the first two shows later becomes ‘Sid's Ahead’ at the same tempo (ie less doomy than on the Milestones album). A reticent Bill Evans is only on the first two airshots, with Garland coming back temporarily before Kelly settles in and, while Adderley misses the starting line-up on a couple of sets, there's also an instance of Coltrane not soloing in favour of Adderley, presumably for timing considerations. Even if you knew some of this stuff already, it's fascinating to have it all in one place.
