This is a wacky idea, not to say entirely misconceived – hence the split rating. There might be some small justification for such a nicely packaged CD, combining both the original mono issue of this album and the subsequent stereo issue, but for one small problem. None of the music was actually recorded in stereo and, as the packaging acknowledges in small print, “the Stereo version, released in 1962, was ‘electronically rechanneled for Stereo’ using as a basis the Mono tapes” (Andorran spelling retained). If by some chance you don't know Miles' first Columbia album, it has wondrous stuff by the famous quintet, including performances of the title-track, ‘All Of You’, ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’ and the fascinating ‘Dear Old Stockholm’, plus the tradition-modifying up-tempos, ‘Ah-Leu-Cha’ and ‘Tadd's Delight’. But including them twice means there's no room for the four extra tracks from the same sessions – another minus point – and the first four notes of the stereo ‘Stockholm’ are missing. Maybe Columbia should have got Mostly Other People Do the Killing do a ‘re-creation’ but, of course, that would be a sick joke.
