If you’ve ever wanted an introduction to Miles’ late 1980s music, you could do worse than buy this 8CD boxed set, which includes remastered versions of Miles’ Warner albums – Tutu, Siesta, Amandla, Dingo, Doo-Bop, Live Around The World and Miles and Quincy Live at Montreux – plus a concert recording from Nice 1986. This mix of live, studio and soundtrack albums shows how Miles was still exploring many music genres in the last six years of his life, from zouk to funk to hip hop. The high-quality packaging belies this set’s modest price, with each CD in a cardboard replica of the original LP, and a 60-page booklet that includes liner notes, photos, plus original album artwork (though not for Live Around The World). The remastered sound is impressive (and I speak as someone who has many of these albums on various specialist audio formats), with enhanced clarity and improved dynamics. But if you already own these albums, or have purchased previous compilations from this era, such as Warner UK’s excellent Perfect Way or Warner France’s five-disc offering, there will be little to tempt you (even the Nice concert is available on the Tutu (Deluxe) CD). Warner Bros. has plenty of hard-to-find and unreleased material in the vaults and one can only hope that more of it will surface. Nevertheless, this is an excellent, value-for-money release, and highly recommended for anyone wanting to explore this period of Miles’s music. But many Miles fans will be hoping that this isn’t the last word on his late period.
