There's no doubting the eminence of these two musicians, presented here as a duo for the first time on record. Graves was in the New York Art Quartet and has worked with Albert Ayler, Don Pullen and Paul Bley; as far as Laswell goes, meanwhile, it's probably quicker to list the musicians with whom he hasn't collaborated. From Peter Brötzmann to Bootsy Collins, via not only Herbie Hancock, John Zorn, Pharoah Sanders and Sonny Sharrock but Mick Jagger, Yoko Ono, Iggy Pop, Brian Eno, Ramones, Afrika Bambaataa and Fela Kuti, he's been there and got the T-shirt (or rather the trademark hat) to prove it. Yet Laswell's rounded, cosmic tone and sometimes meandering lines are not always as satisfying as his CV is impressive; Graves, meanwhile, is not on the sort of form captured on 2008's brilliant Beyond Quantum. That said, there is no doubting the colossal combined musicianship and there are some sparkling moments, especially when Graves begins to reveal his spectacular potential.
