OK, I think we all know the Original Album Series drill by now: 5CDs, card repro sleeves, absolute bargain. This latest addition devoted to international singing superstar and songwriter Milton Nascimento covers a 10-year recording period from 1993 to 2003. Featuring a raft of heavyweight guests including Metheny, Shorter, Hancock and DeJohnette, gorgeous versions of ‘Only A Dream In Rio’ (with James Taylor) and ‘Vera Cruz’ are two of the standouts on Angelus (1993). If the orchestral charts of Amigo (1994) are a little overbearing, the Grammy Award-winning Nascimento (1997) contains some great things, including the transfixing percussion lines of ‘Janela Para O Mundo’. The live album Tambores de Minas (1998) is bookended by a terrific duet with Elis Regina (‘O Que Foi Feito Devera’) and a sparkling ‘Canç¤es de Minas’. Dedicated to his late stepmother, the terrific Pietá (2003) includes the beautiful saudade ‘Tristesse’, a duet with Regina’s daughter, Maria Rita Mariano.
