Nils Petter Molvær must surely be one of Norway's most successful exports – every year he mounts two and sometimes three tours through Scandinavia, Germany, France, Holland and Belgium where he's built a considerable following for his music since the success of Khmer (ECM) back in 1997.
His music seems to be in constant evolution and his latest album, a collaboration with percussionist Mino Cinelu, seems such a natural coming together of creative talents there was a kind of inevitability about it. They work well together, the album title summing up the closeness of their relationship — Sula, the Norwegian island from which Molvær hails, and Madiana a synonym for Martinique, from where Cinelu's father comes from.
The guitar has always framed Molvær's music, and this time he provides the drones around which trumpet and percussion coalesce to weave their dialogue. What is striking is the give-and-take between trumpet and percussion; they leave spaces within the music to breathe that seems to give it a timeless quality. This is a collaboration that suggests much potential, one that begs to be seen live.
