Following its excellent J-Jazz compilations last year, BBE’s curation of classic, largely obscure Japanese improvised music continues apace. As can be heard on previous releases, the spirit of John Coltrane’s classic quartet is pervasive among the incumbents from the mid to late 1970s, and here drummer Takashi ‘Bear’ Miyasaka is very much in Elvin Jones mode, acting as a polyrhymic powerhouse in a sextet whose three horns move from rousingly muscular to soothingly delicate. The heady swirling modalism of Miyasaka’s role model is faithfully applied with good results, and there are also some nice forays into downtempo romanticism, such as ‘Ballad For Mammoth’, which cleverly evokes the likes of ‘Invitation’ and ‘Cry Me A River’.
