More from the series of Paris concerts recorded by radio station Europe No.1, and probably never broadcast in full. Three performances are represented here, the first being from a few days before the Atlantic album European Concert and including a very similar programme.

A couple of bum notes on the piano don't handicap the quirky Lewis too much, and he actually gets two trio numbers at the start of another, early evening concert, thanks to Jackson not showing till later. The initial reaction, that three CDs with some repetition of material might be too much, is soon dispelled by the verve and invention of the playing, especially of course from the endlessly inventive Milt. But John was also a great accompanist, when not trying too hard to be contrapuntal, and the Heath-Kay rhythm-section gets into a serious groove at times. The mix of Lewis compositions with a few standards, and the occasional outside job from Benny Golson, Gary McFarland and Ornette (‘Lonely Woman’), certainly retains the interest and reminds us what a unique group the MJQ was.
