Mole remain one of the more satisfying bands on the RareNoise roster. Now augmented by Takeishi's bass, RGB is an almost entirely acoustic trio album. There are occasional electronic washes, but like EST used them, they are sonic colourings rather than the tunes' drivers. Songs range from the open, enigmatic vistas of ‘Sub-All’ to the Radiohead-ish impetus of ‘Rodriguez’. Gone is some of the humour, but the whole sound is tighter in concept than their debut What's The Meaning? So ‘out there’ collective improvs like ‘Trichromatic’ or ‘T. Overlap’ vie with the eerie meditation ‘Freelance’, which morphs into an unabashed epic climax. ‘Reasons’ likewise builds from jerked rhythms to a rambunctious rumble. Aanderud is no virtuoso but he knows his limits, never straying from a good melody. He has a feel for space and the unsaid. Whether you're coming from The Bad Plus or Aphex Twin, Porcupine Tree or even Jarrett, you'll find something to intrigue in Mole.
