Hopefully time will come when bands won’t feel the need to promote themselves as ‘all-female’. But Herzig's Sheroes remain proud of their band make up; and gender affairs were probably different when they joined forces a decade ago. Either way, it's the music that matters and as befits their previous three outings, All in Good Time remains staunchly in a post Chick Corea, melodic fusion mode. Corea's art permeates Herzig's keys and it's probably no surprise Lenny White helms the production.
The Corea slant hits home on the title track, replete with crackling Rhodes and a funkish groove. By contrast ‘Parade of Sadness’ has that grief wrapped in joy feel that is a ‘Nawlins second line street parade. If Baum's flute flourishes here, then its Regev's sonorous trombone that catches the ear time and again, notably on ‘Behind’. Baum and Regev again stand out on the Herbie-ish ‘Right Now’, but most fun of all is had on the only cover: Beyoncé's ‘Run the World (Girls)’. Beyoncé has become one of the great voices, her songs challenging accepted thinking on everything from race to gender to the right to own your own authority. So, there could hardly be a better choice of material: Beyoncé the Shero taken even higher by a band of Sheroes.
