It delivers what it says on the tin or in this instance the card slip case that houses this CD, ‘smoothest soul jazz with a Caribbean flavour’. Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica it features Alexander sounding surprisingly anonymous on a Fender-Rhodes electric piano, while the real point of interest here is (still) vastly underrated guitarist Ernest Ranglin on this, the first of many albums they collaborated on. At times reminiscent of the tracks Ranglin contributed to the Dr. No James Bond soundtrack, it comes across as cocktail hour entertainment for tourists. In all probability it goes down a treat with a rum punch as they gently pace through two Al Green hits (‘Let's Stay Together’ and ‘Love And Happiness’), Bird's ‘Sly Mongoose’ and a couple of Island staples – ‘Yellow Bird’ and ‘Limbo.’ To his credit, Ranglin cuts through any kitsch elements as though he was subconsciously working with an entirely different group of musicians. A most unique player Ranglin developed a rhythmic approach heavily influenced by Jamaican ska (of which he was a prime architect) and reggae as it was the R&B and modern jazz he heard on radio stations booming out of Florida and Louisiana. There are much better representations of both Monty and Ernie's talents elsewhere.
