I'm Not Talkin' brings together no less than 24 tracks from the late, great Mississippi-born pianist, vocalist, trumpeter, composer and NEA Jazz Master Mose Allison, recorded for Prestige, Columbia, Epic and Atlantic. With influences ranging from Charles Brown and John Lee Hooker to Nat King Cole and boogie-woogie, Allison didn't sound like any of them, seemingly arriving fully-formed as a droll, keen-eared and occasionally world-weary songwriter. At its core, the Allison soundworld featured shuffling drums, walking bass and his own distinctive, rolling piano work, the latter an idiosyncratic mix of understated country blues and Monkish attack. The album includes tracks from Allison's debut album Back Country Suite, recorded in March 1967 when his trio was the rhythm section for the Stan Getz Quartet, plus ‘Parchman Farm’ and the great Percy Mayfield blues ballad ‘Lost Mind’ from his second album for Prestige, Local Color. Previously covered by artists as varied as The Yardbirds, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Leon Russell, Bonnie Raitt and, perhaps most memorably of all, The Who (Allison's ‘Young Man Blues’ opens their legendary Live At Leeds album), Allison's songs will be performed and admired for years to come.
