Saxophonist Kjetil Møster's third outing as leader of his eponymous quartet explores ground opened up on last year's Inner Earth – that is, moving away from the cosmic jazz of Ståle Storløkken's Ra-like synths and filthy Fender Rhodes, which featured on the 2013 debut, and more towards the atmospheric post-rock that guitarist Hans Magnus Ryan's recruitment ushered in. As on Inner Earth, there's a grand sense of scale at work here, from the huge, glacial sheets of guitar that set the disc's opening tone, to the heavily saturated production values running throughout that feel as if every available nook has been filled with sound. Ryan's psychedelic rock licks take centre stage more than once, whipping up a slightly histrionic hysteria, but Møster's wide and ruggedly apocalyptic tenor is up to the task too. Again, it's not hard to spot nods to King Crimson's monumental jazz- prog innovations but the most compelling moments come when the intensity drops and we're given a chance to catch our breath. Surely they must have heard the expression ‘less is more’ by now.
